AG's Chambers to appeal Navindran's acquittal

The Attorney-General’s Chambers plans to appeal over the acquittal of police constable V Navindran by the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court over a charge of causing grievous hurt to A Kugan.
AG’s Chamber’s Appellate and Trial Division head Kamaludin Md Said said they will file an appeal, as an appeal can be made within 10 days.
The police constable had been acquitted this morning over a charge of causing hurt to A Kugan, who died in police custody.

AG’s Chamber’s Appellate and Trial Division head Kamaludin Md Said said they will file an appeal, as an appeal can be made within 10 days.
“Let me get the full report first from my DPP but we will file an appeal. I learnt there are no grounds laid by the sessions judge. When we appeal, the judge will have to write the grounds,” he said.
Today sessions judge Aslam Zainuddin acquitted Navindran without having his defence being called after he ruled the prosecution has failed to prove a prima facie case.
Navindran had claimed trial on Oct 1, 2009 to a charge of causing grievous hurt to the 23-year-old victim, who died in custody from alleged police torture.
He was alleged to have committed the offence at the interrogation room of the Taipan police station in USJ-Subang Jaya at 7am on Jan 16, 2009.
The charge under Section 331 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of 10 years and a fine upon conviction.
Kugan's family members have called for a royal commission of inquiry to probe into Kugan’s death as they were not happy with the acquittal.
