Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said development in Tenang would be scuppered if they voted for the opposition candidate.
"Don't make the mistake of voting for the PAS candidate. Voting for BN will ensure smooth development.
"This is because the state and federal government are under BN," he said at a Chinese New Year dinner at SJKC Ai Chun at Tenang Stesen tonight.
Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Deputy Minister and Labis MP Chua Tee Yong was also present.
BN's Azahar is involved in a straight fight with PAS' Normala Sudirman in the by-election on Sunday.
Muhyiddin said the government had allocated RM30mil for development projects in Tenang and was prepared to increase the allocation if deemed inadequate.
Speaking at a ponggal celebration at SJKC Labis, he said the government would implement a programme to lift the income of the Indian community.
The "income generation programme" for the Indian community would see that every family would undertake a project that would lift their income.
Large BN posters pulled down
Meanwhile, Johor Menteri Besar Abdul Ghani Othman has called on the Indian community in the Tenang state constituency to join the other communities to ensure that the seat remained a bastion for the BN in Johor.
Abdul Ghani, who is also the Johor Umno liaison chairperson, said the people in Tenang should not be deceived by the promises made by the Pakatan Rakyat in their efforts to wrest the seat because they were merely adopting the 'divide and rule' approach in achieving their objective.
"We should all realise and believe that among the pledges made by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to Malaysians under his leadership was to ensure that the interests of every ethnic group, including the Indian community, were not neglected.
"With the support of all the communities in Tenang, we will show to the nation that the communities in Johor, particularly in Tenang, are united and giving undivided support to the BN government," he said at the SJKC Labis today.
Umno Youth members have been told not to react against provocative acts by certain quarters who pulled down large three posters put up by the BN in the run-up to the by-election.
Umno Youth vice-chief Razali Ibrahim said he believed outsiders were behind the provocative acts as such incidents had never occurred in the state before.
"I am worried that such provocations could lead to unwarranted incidents," he told reporters after launching the 1Malaysia Youth telematch at Bukit Dato estate, Labis today.
Razali, who is also deputy youth and sports minister, said Johor Umno Youth had lodged a police report on the incident at 6am today.
