PAS to announce Tenang candidate tonight

PAS is expected to announce its candidate for the Tenang state by-election tonight, its vice-president Salahuddin Ayub said.

He said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang (left) would make the announcement in Labis in an event where PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang would also be in attendance.

"So far, there are two candidates proposed to us," he told Bernama when contacted, adding that one of the candidates proposed is a woman.

Both are from Tenang, he added.

The by-election was called following the death of Sulaiman Taha of BN on Dec 17.

The nomination day is on Saturday while polling is on Jan 30.

Police beef up security
            
Meanwhile, inspector-general of police Ismail Omar announced that the Royal Malaysian Police have set up 26 police booths in Tenang to ensure that the by-election scheduled for the state constituency runs smoothly.

Ismail said the booths were expected to be fully operational next week, with two policemen stationed at each booth.

"We expect the booths to be operational three or four days before the nomination day, which is scheduled for Saturday, until the by-election is concluded," Bernama reported him as saying at Labis police station, Johor, today.

He said apart from filing complaints and enquiries, the public could also lodge report at the booths.

On his visit today, Ismail said he was satisfied with the preparations made by the Johor police contingent to ensure safety and security during the by-election.

"In our meeting, I have stressed the importance of giving extra focus on the traffic flow so that the nomination process will run smoothly," he said.

He also advised road users, especially bus and lorry drivers, to adhere to the traffic regulations to prevent traffic congestions.
