A group of 70 people, including members of the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress (Kimma), staged a noisy protest at Komtar in Penang this afternoon over an alleged racial slur made by a state government official.

NONEThe group wanted the chief minister's political secretary Ng Wei Aik to apologise for the alleged racist remark. The group has accused Ng of telling a restaurant owner last Sunday to "go back to India".

Initially, the group entered the third floor of Komtar, where the state government offices are located, but some of their members persuaded the group to wait outside the building out of courtesy.

The chief minister's special assistant Ng See Fook later met with the group.

A delegation of five individuals was allowed into Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's office on the 28th floor after they insisted on meeting him.

However, as Lim was away, the group met his confidential secretary Farida Hani Yaakob, who received a protest note the brought along.

NONEThe letter, signed by Penang Kimma chairperson Farouk V Raju Mohammed, demanded that Ng retracts and apologises for the alleged remark.

“We also want Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to initiate disciplinary action against Ng in seven days,” said Farouk.

Speaking to reporters after handing over the letter, Farouk said the group would  wait for the CM’s response. It will also announce its further action after a meeting with party members.

Asked about the CCTV footage that he claimed showed Ng making the racist remark, Farouk said he would hand the evidence over to police when necessary.
