A group of young 'mat rempit' or daredevil motorcyclists and pillion riders were detained while performing dangerous stunts on the North-South Expressway near Seremban early today.

Federal police traffic chief Abdul Aziz Yusuf said they were nabbed after the police found out about their plans of turning the expressway into a racing track as part of their new year celebrations.

"They did not expect that we will be conducting an operation there. We waited on both sides of the expressway from 1am till noon today and as a result, 320 motorcycles were inspected," he told reporters at the Seremban south-bound rest and service area today.

Of the total, he said 37 motorcycles were confiscated for having expired road tax, while 166 summonses were issued for various offences including for not having driving licence and illegal modification of vehicles.

Cars damaged by ‘drunk’ youngsters

Meanwhile, a few cars parked by the roadside at Phase 3 Taman Tuanku Jaafar in Seremban were damaged early today, allegedly by a group of youngsters who were believed drunk.

A lawyer, Zulhaimi Zakaria, 45, said he was asleep and was awakened about 3.30am  by a commotion.

"I got out of my house and saw many people had gathered outside to inspect their vehicles," he said when met by Bernama.

He said he went to check on his Toyota Avanza car and found the wind screen on the driver's side smashed.

A security guard, Kamarulzaman Ibrahim, 30, said the windshield of his Proton Wira car was also smashed.

"I was told that it was the act of four youngsters, who were believed drunk," he added.

He said four cars parked along Jalan 3/8 were damaged and also a few others which were parked at Jalan 3/9.

A few residents who were on a neighbourhood patrol saw the act, but they were not able to go after the youngsters who were on two motorcycles, he added.
