At the stroke of midnight, the main cities and towns including the federal capital saw their skies lit up with fireworks displays in a multitude of colours.
Motorists, particularly in urban hubs, stopped their vehicles momentarily and hooted their horns to welcome the new year while enjoying the fireworks shows.
Various organsisations also held concerts featuring popular artistes to welcome the second decade of the new milennium.
In Kuala Lumpur, more than 70,000 people thronged Dataran Merdeka, mostly parents with their children in tow besides youngsters who had come as early as 6pm to witness a new year concert hosted by the AmBank Group.
Popular artistes featured at this conert, the sixth organised by the banking giant to welcome new years this millenium included Mizz Nina, Amy Search, Daniel Lee, David Arumugam, Ramlah Ram, Pop Shuvit and Ernie.
The event was attended by City Hall director-general Salleh Yusup and AmBank Group Azman Hashim, who also delivered four songs much to the delight of the crowd.
The celebration was broadcast live on the TV2 channel.
40,000 at KLCC Park
At the KLCC Park, about 40,000 revellers, including foreign tourists, gathered at the park since 5pm.
The crowd were captivated by a symphony fountain show, zapin and Bangra dances, and Chinese drum beats before fireworks lighted up the sky.
In Jalan Bukit Bintang, local and foreign artists entertained the crowd at the Going Gaga 2011 Concert at the Pavilion compound.
About 25,000 people, including tourists swarmed Jalan Bukit Bintang which was closed to traffic from the Selangor Foundation junction.
Police were on hand for crowd control at all these places.
In Shah Alam, about 80,000 people filled up i-City in Section 7 to usher in the new year.
Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim joined the crowd in the new year countdown before a spectacular display of fireworks heat up the night.
