Kit Siang: 1Malaysia no nation building tool

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang today refuted Prime Minister Najib Razak’s claim that 1Malaysia is a nation-building initiative to foster unity among Malaysians.
“Twenty months since the introduction of Najib’s ‘1Malaysia, People First, Performance Now’ slogan, instead of giving Malaysians a new sense of being Malaysian, the reverse has taken place,” said Lim in a statement.
Yesterday, the premier lashed out against those who accused his pet-concept of being a political tool and tried to defended that is it an effort to unite Malaysia.
As proof, Lim who is Ipoh Timor MP, pointed to the brain drain of talented Malaysians overseas despite the government’s best efforts to attract the best brains in the world to Malaysia.
He pointed out that despite the pluralist message of Najib’s 1Malaysia, there had been an unprecedented increase in irresponsible politicking of racist and religious bigotry which has disillusioned the public.
More so, said Lim repeating his usual argument, those guilty of going against the principles of 1Malaysia are from within Umno, the very heart of BN, spearheaded by the party-owned mass media Utusan Malaysia.
“(This) has raised serious questions about Najib’s sincerity and commitment to 1Malaysia and his political will to promote it,” said Lim reiterating his previous stand on the matter.
Indeed Lim contends that 2010 have ended on a worse note despite 1Malaysia being in full swing, that it begs the question whether Malaysia can achieve the inclusive society, high-income economy and developed nation status that Najib trumpets he is striving for.
Is ministry survey credible?
Lim also questioned Minister of Information, Communication and Culture Rais Yatim’s claims that 84 percent of Malaysians understand the 1Malaysia concept, with 72 percent declaring acceptance.
The minister had referred to his ministry’s own survey carried out between June and July this year.
“There will have to be an independent opinion poll to establish what percentage of Malaysians believe in the findings of this survey by the Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture,” challenged the veteran politician.
He added that in the first place, do all the BN ministers and leaders have a common understanding of the 1Malaysia concept?
“I said in Parliament in March that 1Malaysia means a thousand-and-one different things to the Najib cabinet and government – both to Umno and non-Umno cabinet ministers,” he said in a parting shot.
