The National Union of Bank Employees (Nube) today urged the government to amend the law to accord greater protection to trade unions and their leaders.

Its general secretary, J Solomon, said trade union leaders at the national level or at the workplace were being discriminated against and victimised by unscrupulous employers.
He said employers had terminated the services of trade union leaders on many occasions based on trumped-up charges, and this was becoming more evident of late.
"The reason is because the Human Resources Ministry is not acting against errant employers and the employers are becoming more arrogant and displaying their might in total disregard of the laws of this country," he said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur.
‘A glaring case’
Solomon also highlighted "a glaring case" where the chairman and secretary of the union worksite committee at a company in Malacca were dismissed for merely handing over to the Labour Department a memorandum addressed to the human resources minister.
"The two union officials were on annual leave on that day. This is a clear case of union-busting by a company.
"Foreign corporations, whose main objective is to maximise their profits at any cost, disregard local civil institutions, and this blatant disregard of how things work in Malaysia cannot be tolerated," he said.
He said the government should look at according more protection to trade union leaders, trade unions and workers in the country to ensure their well-being.
