DAP publicity secretary Ronnie Liu said the party is discussing whether or not to field candidates in seats previously held by MCA in Kelantan and Terengganu.

He said, however, that the party does not intend to reveal details until it has completed its deliberations.

Liu hinted, though, that the party may be interested in the Kota Baru seat in Kelantan and Kuala Terengganu seat in Terengganu.

Both parliamentary constituencies have a significant number of non-Malay voters and had previously attracted MCA candidates.

"These are seats where DAP might stand a chance. We are studying the matter to get the entire picture. We hope other parties will also look into the entire picture before making decisions," he said.

Liu revealed this when responding to Barisan Alternatif's intention to wrest 60 percent of the state seats in Penang in the coming general election.

No threat

When contacted, PAS central working committee member and MP for Kuala Terengganu Dr Syed Azman Syed said he accepted DAP's plan to contest in the two states with an "open mind".

The PAS leader said DAP's plan would not pose a problem for his Muslim-based party.

"It cannot do any harm as DAP would o­nly be vying mostly for Chinese votes. In the last general elections we had independent candidates and they were also from DAP," he said.

However, Syed Azman was of the opinion that DAP does not have suitable candidates since the party is plagued with a "power struggle and infighting".
