More women for PAS top posts

PAS will have more women joining its Central Working Committee (CWC) come this June, its secretary-general Nasharudin Mat Isa said today.
He said more women are expected to be nominated because of the amendments to the party's constitution, allowing members of the CWC to be increased from the present 28 to 33.
The amendments, which were submitted last year, were approved by the Registrar of Societies two weeks ago, he told malaysiakini at the Parliament House lobby.
"The number of vice-president posts has also been increased from two to three," he said, adding that he strongly believes more women will be elected to the CWC.
At present, there are three women in the PAS CWC and the party has three more women senators in the Dewan Negara.
Nasharudin said the party's top leadership welcomed more women in its central working committee. "It is not against Islam for women to participate in politics or assume leadership positions," he said.
"Women often stay away from politics because of cultural considerations. Election campaigns done in this country are still very backward unlike those in more advanced democracies and this is why it is sometimes more appropriate for men to handle them," he added.
Nasharudin said that women are "good at campaigning, as their persuasive power is excellent, unlike that of men". He said the top leadership is currently awaiting a report from the women's wing on the fielding of more women candidates for the 2004 general elections.
Khalil's credibility
Nasharudin also said the PAS CWC will meet on April 15 to discuss new developments concerning the Umno-PAS technical committee meeting for the proposed unity talks. He reiterated that PAS will not go ahead with the talks if the two prerequisites set by the party are not met.
He said another issue to be addressed at the CWC meeting will be the credibility of the technical committee's chairperson, Khalil Yaacob who is Information Minister and Umno secretary-general.
This follows the police report was lodged against Khalil by Beserah state assemblyman Fauzi Abdul Rahman recently, alleging the former of misappropriating state resources during his tenure as Pahang Menteri Besar.
The two pre-conditions sets by PAS for the unity talks with Umno to proceed are allowing the PAS party organ Harakah to be published twice a week as before instead of the present once a month and the resumption of oil royalty payments to PAS-led Terengganu state government.
