Retrenchment scheme to be set up by January

Human Resource Minister Dr S Subramaniam said a retrenchment scheme to help retrenched workers would be set up by January next year.

Subramaniam ( right ) said under the scheme, workers who are retrenched by their companies would benefit.

“The scheme will assist the unemployed worker for a year or two. At the same time the government is also studying a more suitable system to assist retrenched workers,” he told reporters after launching the MyCareer Fair 2010 at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur today.

In confirming a report by news portal, Malaysian Insider, Subramaniam said the government would allocate an initial amount of RM40 million for the scheme.

“Yes, the fund will be from the government allocation and not derived from workers contributions,” he said.

However, he did not reveal details of the subsidy scheme.

Meanwhile, Subramaniam said from the 280,000 who were seeking for employment by registering through the JobsMalaysia portal, 100,000 had been successful this year.

He added that another 3.32 million job opportunities would be created once projects under the 12 National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) laboratories were completed.

As for the MyCareer Fair, he said 10,000 job opportunities were available in various sectors like IT, banking, telecommunications and interior decorations.

He added that 115 local and foreign companies, including Digi, CIMB, RapidKL and Pharmaniaga were taking part in the three-day programme.
