A government backbencher today said the RM2 million allocation for the development of small and medium industries (SMIs) in Selangor for the year 2011 is too little.

NONEMohamed Azmin Ali (PKR-Bukit Antarabangsa) said the SMIs in Selangor needed to be developed as they could generate a source of income to the state.

The role of the SMIs in strengthening the economy of a country had been proven in South Korea and Taiwan, he said when debating the motion on the Development Estimates 2011 at the state legislative assembly sitting today.

If the state government were truly serious in developing the SMIs, the allocation for it must be increased, he said.

Azmin also said that the term small and medium industries (SMIs) used by the state government was widened from the village industry to the information and service industries.
