Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Tan Lian Hoe has chided the action of some traders who raised prices of goods during the recent floods in Kedah.

Tan said such as act was irresponsible since the victims themselves were facing difficulties after losing their belongings and source of income during the floods.

"They (traders) should instead assist the government to help ease the burden of the flood victims.

"Not that they should not seek profits in business but not seize the opportunity when people are suffering," said Tan after handing out Aidiladha contributions to families of 150 flood victims in Kampung Gonchar, Gunung Keriang and Kampung Seberang Tambang Badak near Alor Setar yesterday.

The ministry had received several complaints that traders had raised the prices of candles and mineral water during the floods.

Meanwhile, Tan said the ministry would also set up a disaster fund to help ease the burden of victims affected by natural disasters, including floods.
