An informal PKR Youth meet has passed six resolutions to close ranks and improve the party's image in light of the ongoing party elections.
In the meet organised by one of the Youth chief candidates, Badrul Hisham Shaharin - better known as Chegubard (in cente in photo right) - in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, he said that the resolutions will be handed to the party president and leadership today.
"In general, the resolutions are about the improvement of the party and the election process, while maintaining the trust that the public have in us," he told reporters after the two-hour function.
The handing over will be done by Pahang PKR liaison committee chairperson Fauzi Abdul Rahman, described by Badrul as someone "respected and neutral since he is not contesting in this year's party polls".
"Fauzi himself will be making the announcement if there are any developments over our resolutions," said Badrul.
When asked further on the meet attended by some 200 party members, Badrul said that the question of pulling out from the race never arose for him.
"That is not in our calculations. We will continue in the contest."
However he refused to divulge if the resolutions included the call to abort the party polls.
"At the moment, the elections process has been generally accepted by the members and we see that it is good in principle. But at the same time, we don't deny that there are some irregularities and so on. This is what we want to fix.
"I'm sure that the party leaders are big hearted enough to accept criticism and also want to fix things," he said.
"Party enemies will be exposed"
At the same time, constitutional expert Prof Dr Abdul Aziz Bari (below right) who was invited to give a motivational talk at the meet, said that he had advised party members to be patient and not "move to the rhythm of outsiders".
"Although there are some weaknesses (in the party elections), I would like to see it as a courageous move by the party to try something new which is the direct elections.
"There may be problems, but that's the beauty of it - leaders get elected in an open and transparent manner. Sure, there are some leaders who used unhealthy ways to campaign, but eventually, they will be exposed.
"Maybe not now, and that is why I said to be patient. Jangan sampai bakar kelambu (Don't burn your own house down) simply because of some problems. Use the channels that are already prepared. There is nothing that's perfect and this is the first time (for direct elections), so just be calm."
Party intact
Abdul Aziz also said that the party leadership should face the problem head on.
"Although some of the criticism directed at the party might be true, the party system must still be respected," he said, adding that those defeated should accept the results with an open heart.
"The party will continue to move on. It's not the first time someone has threatened to leave.
"In history, there were even bigger figures who have threatened to leave, such as (Umno founder) Onn Jaafar and (Gua Musang MP) Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (left). But their party is still standing.
"If the enemies want to capitalise on this, that is their problem. But if PKR receives a beating, they should start finding new ways of regaining public trust," he said.
