While the recapture of the state seat in Kelantan and retention of the parliamentary constituency in Sabah seemed to bolster Barisan's chances in the next general election, the coalition should not take things easy, the deputy prime minister said.
"We cannot measure the victories in Galas and Batu Sapi although there is a big change (in the political situation), a change for the good of Barisan, we cannot be complacent because there is still a lot of work to do," he told reporters at the MIC Deepavali open house at the Putra World Trade Centre.
Muhyiddin, who is Barisan deputy chairman, was asked about the readiness of Barisan to face the 13th general election after yesterday's fine showing in Galas and Batu Sapi.
In Galas, Barisan's Abdul Aziz Yusoff won with a majority of 1,190 votes in a straight fight with Dr Zulkefli Mohamad of Pas who obtained 4,134 votes.
The Barisan candidate in Batu Sapi, Linda Tsen Thau Lin, won with a majority of 6,359 votes. She garnered 9,124 votes, Ansari Abdullah of PKR, 2,919 and SAPP president Yong Teck Lee, 1,750.
‘This is just the beginning’
On the big majorities that Barisan secured, Muhyiddin said: “This development may be due to the people's acceptance of the government's policies and the leadership of the prime minister as well as the hard work we have been doing the last one or two years.
"However, this is just the beginning, and we must redouble our efforts to take advantage of our early success."
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Dr Koh Tsu Koon, believed that the wins were a "manifestation of the people's support of 1Malaysia."
The Gerakan president also cited the "efficient and dedicated" Barisan election machinery.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the victories reflected the people's belief in the government's transformation programmes.
The programmes, together with the 1Malaysia concept, have increased the people’s confidence in the government, he said.
The MCA deputy president said the Chinese in the two areas showed growing trust in the government.
