State assembly speaker Mohd Nassuruddin Daud confirmed today that the notice of vacancy for the Galas state seat had been sent to the Election Commission.

He told Bernama that the notice was sent at 12.45pm yesterday.

The seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent assemblyman Chek Hashim Sulaima, 46, on Monday at the Al-Islam Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur after a long battle with colon cancer.

Chek Hashim won Galas in the 2008 general election with a 646-vote majority. He polled 4,399 votes to defeat the then incumbent Saufi Deraman of BN.

Galas is one of the state seats under the Gua Musang parliamentary
constituency.
