Nurul Izzah surprised by nomination for No 2

Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar (below) says she is surprised that a division has nominated her for the highly-coveted deputy president post.

She said this when asked to comment on the results of the Sabah’s Keningau division’s AGM last week, that saw her No 2 nomination.

Keningau also nominated Federal Territory PKR chief Zaid Ibrahim for the post of party president.

"The election secretariat informed me of the fact,” Nurul Izzah told Malaysiakini today.

She will need a second nomination to be eligible for the contest.

The eldest daughter of PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim however said that while she appreciated the division’s confidence in her as deputy president, she will only contest for the vice presidency.

At press time, four candidates have secured sufficient nominations for the deputy post.

Azmin Ali leads the tally with 72, while Zaid Ibrahim has 27, Mustaffa Kamil Ayub 15 and Tian Chua 3.

In top 10

Nurul is amongst the top ten candidates with the highest number of nominations so far.

She has received 12 to date - 11 of which are for vice president - with the latest coming from the Pensiangan division that met today.

The Puteri Reformasi had earlier stated her intention to stay out of the party leadership race altogether.

She however made an about turn on Sept 23, saying that overwhelming support from the members had changed her mind.
