NUJ Malaysia gets new president

Utusan Melayu reporter Mohamed Ha’ta Wahari was elected National Union of Journalists Malaysia (NUJ) president at its 17th biennial delegates conference held at a hotel in Petaling Jaya today.

san Melayu reporter Mohamed Ha’ta Wahari was elected National Union of Journalists Malaysia (NUJ) president at its 17th biennial delegates conference held at a hotel in Petaling Jaya today.
In a statement today, NUJ said Mohamed Ha’ta defeated Saifulizam Mohamed, also from Utusan Melayu, by a 218-vote majority.
Mohamed Ha’ta takes over the leadership from Norila Daud (left) who did not contest. Norila had been president since 1998.
For the post of deputy general-secretary (two posts), Kuan Tai Huat (Nanyang Siang Pau) and Baharuddin Reseh Yaacob (Utusan Melayu) emerged the winners in the three-cornered contest.
Chin Sung Chew (Sin Chew) and Osman Lisut (NST) won the posts of vice-presidents unopposed.
Incumbent general-secretary V. Anbalagan (NST) was returned unopposed when nominations closed on Sept 3.
Deputy general treasurer Hafiz Idzla Mohd Hafidzan (Utusan) also won his post uncontested.
Mohamed Ha’ta in his speech said the new executive council would look beyond “bread and butter” issues and would urge the government to liberalise laws that affected the print media in particular.
The delegates approved a motion to set up an NUJ welfare fund to aid members and their families.
They also passed a resolution to seek approval from its 1,337 members to increase the monthly subscription from the current RM5 to RM10.
