Kelantan Umno claimed that its new leadership line-up is posing a major threat to PAS, and that the opposition party which rules the state is feeling the heat as the general election looms.

According to a Berita Minggu report today, the new leadership announced by Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad last Thursday is capable of taking over the state from PAS.

Gua Musang Umno information chief Norzula Mat Diah claimed that 'arrogant' PAS leaders in Kelantan are now worried of losing the state to Umno due to the strength of the new party line-up.

During his recent Kelantan visit, Mahathir announced the appointment of Kota Bharu division chief Zaid Ibrahim as deputy state liaison chief to replace Anuar Musa, while Tenaga Nasional Berhad chairman Dr Awang Adek Husin was made treasurer.

The prime minister also appointed Tumpat division chief Mat Nawawi Mat Jusoh as the new party secretary for the state.

The new line up also includes Mohd Alwi Che Ahmad, deputy chief for Peringat, as state information chief to replace Ismail Mamat.

Meanwhile, former Second Finance Minister Mustapa Mohamed has been retained as state liaison chief.

To gain sympathy

"PAS is still pretending that it is strong just to gain sympathy from the public," the daily quoted Norzula as saying.

"We will see how far PAS can continue telling lies to the people about its strength," he said.

The Paloh state assembly representative was commenting on Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Aziz Nik Mat's statement that PAS is not affected by Umno's new line up in Kelantan.

Nik Aziz said PAS has no reason to worry about the changes as it only involves the party leadership and not its policies.

"Nik Aziz's statement is nothing but to please himself as he is well aware of Umno's new strategy and strength," said Norzula.
