DAP: Amend constitution on Parliament seats

DAP wants the government to amend the federal constitution by amending the number of seats in the Dewan Rakyat from an even number of 222 to an odd number to ensure that Malaysia does not face a hung parliament in the next general election.

the number of seats in the Dewan Rakyat from an even number of 222 to an odd number to ensure that Malaysia does not face a hung parliament in the next general election.
Its deputy national treasurer Nga Kor Ming (right) said, "The present 222 seats in the Dewan Rakyat may cause the country to have a hung parliament in the next general election should BN and PR win 111 seats respectively.
"I am prepared to support the effort to amend the federal constitution for the country's greater interest and will support the move to enact an Anti-hopping Law, which will be extremely important to safeguard our system of democracy," the DAP Taiping MP and party state secretary added.
Nga said called for Malaysia to emulate India by enacting a similar law on anti-party hopping so that any seat won by an elected representative who defects from the party on which he or she won with the people's mandate would automatically be declared vacant.
"Then a by-election must be held to allow the voters to make a fresh choice, or to punish the defected one who betrayed their trust.
"I fervently believe this is of utmost importance to protect Malaysia from been held to ransom by some irresponsible political frogs in the country," he added.
