Green Surf (Sabah Unite to Re-Power the Future) wants the People's Assembly Action Committee to name the majority of those wanting the coal-fired power plant project in Sinakut, Lahad Datu.

NONEIts spokesman, Wong Tack, who is also president of the Sabah Environmental Protection Association (Sepa), said a coalition of non-government organisations wanted committee chairman A Nagaraju to give details on a claim that people in Sabah's east coast wanted the project to proceed.

He said the people were not in favour of the project from the first site in Silam, Lahad Datu. The state government did not approve the location due to health and environmental considerations.

"(And then) it was proposed for Sandakan where the people there protested," he said in a statement in Kota Kinabalu today.

Wong was reacting to Nagaraju's claim that people in the east coast of the state wanted the project to spur economic development.

He said a poll conducted among members of the Lahad Datu Chinese Chamber of Commerce showed 86.2 percent of the people objected to the plant.

On Aug 19, the Department of Environment rejected the detailed environmental impact assessment for the 300 megawatt plant.
