The media reported recently that a 62-year Indian father was hacked to death by four men, presumably gangsters, for preventing his sons from joining their gang. One of his sons is also reported to be seriously injured while trying to protect his father.

Although commission of crimes are not restricted to any one particular ethnic group, the incidences of crimes, specifically murders committed by Indians on Indians, are becoming more prevalent lately.

My concern is with regards to the kind reaction that would have been elicited from some groups if the police had killed an Indian. Protest letters and physical protests would have been the norm.

Being killed by the police is a loss of life and equally, being killed by gangsters is also a loss of life. Families would have lost a member, children a father or wife a husband. It is equally a tragic loss.

Why don’t the Indian groups also launch large scale protests against such indiscriminate killings and other crimes conducted by Indians. Why the deafening silence?
