The Pahang state government has targeted to connect 30,000 houses in Kuantan with high-speed broadband by the end of the year.

State Information, Innovation and Information Technology Committee chairman Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin said initially 3,000 premises would get the service before it would be extended to cover 30,000 throughout the state.
He said the high-speed broadband service would be a boon to business activities in the state.
Currently about 30 percent of the areas in Pahang are connected to broadband and its coverage is expected to increase to 40 percent by the end of the year, he told reporters after presenting 1Malaysia netbooks to 600 students from three secondary schools in Lanchang state constituency in Temerloh today.
He said more transmitters and telecommunication towers would be built in areas which encountered broadband access difficulty.
Mohd Sharkar said 60,000 students in the state would get free 1Malaysia netbooks and those who sell or misuse them could be fined up to RM50,000.
