The Elections Commission (EC) is to appoint the Malaysian Youth Council (MYC) as an assistant registrar to help the EC register youths as electors, EC public relations officer Sabri Said said today.

He said MYC president Mohamed Maliki Mohamed Rapiee met with EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof at the EC headquarters today to discuss how best the two organisations could work together to get more youths to register as electors.

Sabri said that as of the first quarter of this year, 4.3 million or 28 percent of citizens aged 21 and above were eligible to register as electors but had not done so.

He also said that the EC electoral rolls as of the first quarter showed that 4.2 million or 37 percent of the registered electors were people categorised as youths, aged between 21 and 40.

Sabri said the EC felt that the MYC could play a major role to help the EC register youths as electors as well as explain to them their right as electors because the MYC had a large network of youth organisations at state and district level nationwide.
