Representatives of two kampungs today send a memorandum urging Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to close sand mines operated by Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd.

Kampung Bestari Jaya federal development and security committee chairperson Yeop Mat Sanip said the villagers feared that sand mining nearby would affect the structure of their houses.

"The sand mining does not only worry the 2,500 kampung people but also the 8,000 students of Universiti Industri Selangor in Bestari Jaya," he said after presenting the memorandum at the Menteri Besar's office in Shah Alam.

Ramlan Shaari who was representating villagers of Kg Kambing Susu hopes that the sand mine would be closed as it had caused erosion to the oil palm plantation and fish ponds nearby.

He said temporary closure of the sand mine as directed by the Hulu Selangor Land Office was not the solution as sand mining had affected the people's income.

Ramlan, who is also Malay sand mining pperators action committee secretary, regretted that the memorandum was only received by a receptionist as no officers were available.

Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd is a subsidiary of the Selangor state government.
