JAKARTA Three leading suspects in the Bali bombing reconstructed final meetings they allegedly held in an east Java village before the attack, the chief investigator said.

Imam Samudra, Mukhlas and Amrozi re-enacted meetings they held in early October in East Java province's district of Lamongan, said chief investigator I Made Mangku Pastika.

"The reconstruction is intended to prove that the meetings happened and that they indeed know each other," Pastika told AFP, adding that no new information was uncovered in the process.

Police said Samudra is the field commander of the bombings and described Mukhlas as "controller" of the October 12 attacks that killed at least 190 people in Bali's Kuta tourist district.

Amrozi allegedly bought chemicals and procured the car used in the attack.

15 acts replayed

Police also say Mukhlas is operations chief of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) regional terror network, which is widely accused of a role in the Bali bombing.

Pastika did not give details of the reconstruction but Elshinta radio station said that the suspects replayed 15 acts, including the handover of money to Amrozi from another suspect, Idris, who is still at large, and the purchase of a Mitsubishi van used in the bombing.

Amrozi smiled throughout the process while Samudra at one point shouted "Insha Allah (God willing) we shall win," the radio station said.

The three, along with five other suspects, were flown to Java from Bali on Saturday under armed guard. The five did not take part in Sunday's re-enactment.

The eight suspects were to fly back to Bali later on Sunday, Pastika said.

Planning sessions in Soho

During reconstructions Saturday in the central Java city of Solo, the name of another suspect in the Bali bombing emerged, identified as Zulkarnaen.

Pastika said Zulkarnaen, who is still on the run, was commander of Askari Islamiyah, a militia linked to JI.

Investigators had already known of the suspect's involvement but until Saturday had not publicized his name, he said.

Police have said the bombers met for planning sessions in Solo, and that after the bombing Sumadra frequented Internet cafes in Surabaya before fleeing to the west coast of Java, where he was arrested.

Chemicals used in the bombing were allegedly bought in Surabaya, the capital of East Java.

Police have arrested a total of 15 people for links to the Bali attack. Their trials are due to begin in February. AFP
