Umno has described Terengganu Menteri Besar Abdul Hadi Awang's plan to send a delegation to study implementation of hudud laws in several Arab nations as a clear indication that the opposition party has politicised the hudud laws.

Its vice president Najib Tun Razak said today that Abdul Hadi should have done it before tabling the (Hudud) Bill. This is really a political ploy (by PAS)," Bernama quoted him as saying in Pekan.

Abdul Hadi said on Friday that the Terengganu government would send a delegation to Saudi Arabia, Iran and Sudan to study the implementation of the Hudud laws in the three countries.

Najib who is also Defence Minister said that PAS' introduction of the hudud laws is for political purposes.

Not real attempt

"This is not a real attempt to implement hudud laws as such laws need an in-depth study before implementation and (it) has to be certain on several areas as well as appropriate situation," he said.

Najib said the Barisan Nasional (BN) government had strived to implement the Islamic laws wherever appropriate.

"That is why the world sees us as an Islamic nation but PAS played up this issue for the reason that only a small portion of the laws (Hudud) that we have yet to implement," he said.

The Terengganu Legislative Assembly passed the Syariah Criminal Enactment (Hudud and Qisas) this year but the laws have yet to be enforced in the state.

The PAS government has not set a time frame for its implementation.
