The Overseas Umno Club Bureau will prepare a strategic plan to identify the reasons why overseas Malaysian students are not supporting the government.

Its chairman, Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the plan, which would be ready next month, would enable Umno to find new approaches to win them over.

"We want to know why they shun the government. Is it due to lack of attention from the government, weaknesses of the Malaysia Student Department or the apathy of the Malaysian embassies?" he said at a dinner hosted by the bureau for new United Kingdom and Ireland students in Kuala Lumpur tonight.

Ahmad Shabery said the Overseas Umno Club Bureau would examine whether the problem was due to personality or organisational factors, or accusations hurled against Umno and government by the opposition.

"The people may not be in favour of the government not because the opposition is good but may be due to their anxiety over certain individuals associated with the government," said Ahmad Shabery, who is also youth and sports minister.
