Selangor PAS commissioner Hasan Ali has been asked to take Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria to court over the latter’s claims that the PAS leader had met with him, to discuss the controversial political cooperation between PAS and Umno.

The matter surfaced at the Islamic party’s state meeting at the MBSA auditorium in Shah Alam earlier today, revealed Shah Alam parliamentarian Khalid Samad.

Kota Raja parliamentarian Siti Mariah Mahmud reportedly put the proposal up on the meeting’s agenda because of the serious implications that the accusations had on party unity.

NONE However, when contacted after the meeting, Siti Mariah refused to comment on the matter.

The proposed legal action takes the matter one step further, after PAS leaders like party vice-president Mahfuz Omar ( right ) demanded an apology from Harussani after Hasan Ali refuted the claims.

The online version of PAS party organ Harakah today reported Mahfuz’s demands, where he said, “Harussani should also resign as Perak mufti because he once said that as mufti, he will not make conflicting statements, while the claims he made about Hasan is false.”

Khalid Samad revealed these details to Malaysiakini today after the meeting, adding that Hasan had explained his encounter with the Perak mufti to the party at the meeting, repeating his denial of the allegations.

'Waste of time'

“He said that he went to see Harussani only to learn from the Perak mufti who has been a mufti for 30 years. He denied talking about the unity-government issue. Basically he is calling Harussani a liar. That is the gist of it.” said Khalid.

Harussani had earlier offered himself to be a mediator in efforts to “unite the Muslims and Malays” in the country.

According to the Perak mufti, leaders from PAS and Umno had approached him recently to discuss and seek his views on ways of uniting the two largest Malay-based political parties in the country.

In his statement, Hasan urged his detractors in the party who are against the unity talks not to waste time on the issue.

According to Khalid, the rest of the meeting focused on looking into the details of implementing plans and programs mooted during the Islamic party’s recent muktamar in Kota Bharu last month.

Most prominent among these, he added, are plans to sway both Malay and non-Malay votes towards the party.
