Utusan resurrects 'Anwar a CIA stooge' charge

Utusan Malaysia today continued its attack on Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim with a report - this time citing a posting by an obscure New York-based blogger - that resurrects the now decade-old portrayal of Anwar as an agent of the US.

The Malay-language daily in its Sunday Mingguan Malaysia edition, quoted one Elaine Meinel Supkis - who it described as being a “well-known blogger” - to "reveal" that Anwar is a “tool” of the US’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

“Anwar is a CIA creature. That is, he is not an 'agent' but rather, a 'tool'. His list of buddies proves this: they are all undercover CIA,” Mingguan quoted Meinel as saying in her ‘Culture of Life News’ blog.

Mingguan, citing Meinel’s posting - bizarrely entitled ‘CIA and Mossad want Anwar Ibrahim assassinated’ - said Anwar serves to protect the US’ interests and to undertake covert planning on its behalf in Malaysia.

Little is known about Meinel other than the information posted on her blogs.

In her profile, she describes herself as having grown up “on many observatory mountains and secret government testing grounds, burr under the saddle of the Real Rulers of America since childhood,” and is the “family black sheep with three bags of wool.”

Now, Meinel describes herself further, she lives “on a mountain with horses and cats and dogs and chickens and a husband.”

Anwar's detractors have accused him of posing a wide - and at times conflicting range - of security problems.

Other than being accused of serving Israeli, Jewish, US and Western interests, he has also been accused of having links with Islamic terrorist groups. 

He currently also faces charges of committing sodomy with a former male aide. 

Yesterday, Bernama reported allegations that Anwar had hired media contacts, particularly in CNN, to engage in rebuilding his image after launching in Malaysia a series of anti-Israel rhetoric over the past few months.

Writing on an influential US online news portal, The New Ledger, Treviño Strategies and Media Inc president Joshua Treviño was reported to have claimed that CNN's Connector of the Day programme was notably tame in its questioning of Anwar's allegedly anti-Semitic rhetoric as part of his ‘apology tour’.

Commenting on this, Umno vice-president Mohd Shafie Apdal (left) said it would not be surprising if Anwar had in fact paid for his recent with CNN in an effort to convince Jewish lobbyists that he is not anti-Israel.

Those who were well acquainted with the PKR advisor know that it is not impossible for him to have done so, said the rural and regional development minister.

"If it is true that Anwar paid for the CNN interview, it shows that he stoop so low to the United States and the Jews... he will do anything to achieve his ambition of becoming the prime minister."
