Kota Alam Shah assemblyperson M Manoharan has called on Malaysians to observe a one-minute silence on July 16 to mark Teoh Beng Hock's death anniversary.
Manoharan, who was Teoh's lawyer when the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) investigated the political aide, has asked that it be observed at 2pm next Friday.
"The one-minute silence is for Malaysians to reflect on Teoh's sudden death, and also to commemorate the first-year anniversary of the incident," he said.
"If Teoh's inquest and the royal commission of inquiry fail to resolve the mystery surrounding the death, then next year we should add another minute," said Manoharan, who was held under the Internal Security Act for 18 months for his involvement in the Hindraf movement.
Teoh died mysteriously
Teoh, a political aide to Selangor state exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on July 16 last year, after being questioned overnight at the Selangor MACC headquarters at Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam. He was brought in as a witness.
The mysterious circumstances surrounding Teoh’s death, which occurred just a day before his wedding day, have resulted in an on-going inquest. The probe, which has yet to be concluded, is to uncover the cause of Teoh’s death.
The government also ordered the setting-up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to review the interrogation procedures of the MACC, which are under question.
The inquest will resume next Wednesday with a decision by coroner Azmil Muntapha Abbas on the application by Teoh’s family and the Selangor government for Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand (right) to testify via video conferencing.
Video-conferencing testimony has been in use within Malaysian courts but it had not conducted with a foreign country.
Besides this proposal by Manoharan, from the DAP, other programmes have also been lined up to commemorate Teoh’s death.
This includes DAPSY, its socialist youth wing, holding a morning prayer session that Friday morning at Plaza Masalam. A ceramah will also be organised at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall that same night.
On July 17, at 8am, there will be another prayer service to be held at Teoh’s grave in Semenyih.
A blog in Chinese has been set up to commemorate the political aide.
