Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim today denied rumours that he would be stepping down soon, following an apparent revolt within his Parti Keadilan Rakyat.

NONE"Irresponsible people are spreading rumours alleging that I will quit after (my) Australia trip. Nothing can be further from the truth. I will be at work on Monday," Khalid (right) wrote on his Facebook page.

Sin Chew Daily in a report today said there was speculation Khalid would quit after returning from a working trip to Brisbane, Australia.

The report said although Khalid had relinquished his position as Selangor PKR head, to be replaced by party vice-president Azmin Ali, rumours about him stepping down as menteri besar were persistent.

Offiically, Khalid vacated the position in order to focus on administering the state, but some observers and Umno leaders said it showed he was a weak leader and that it signalled Azmin's ambitions to take over as menteri besar.

Quoting anonymous spokespersons from Khalid's office, the Sin Chew Daily report said his trip was planned three months ago, and had nothing to do with the latest developments.

"Talk that Khalid was going overseas to contemplate stepping down as menteri besar is not true," said the report, quoting a source.
