Two Selangor assemblypersons have been summoned before the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Putrajaya tomorrow to have their statements recorded.

PKR’s Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei (Sri Muda) and Amirudin Shari (Batu Caves) received separate notices on Monday, to assist in investigations classified under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act.

This relates to individuals who corruptly receive or obtain gratification to favour or not to favour someone in relation to their duties.

Mat Shuhaimi, when contacted, confirmed receipt of the notice. Although not told what this is about, he said he would report to the MACC headquarters.

“I feel this is the second onslaught by BN in using the MACC to humiliate (Selangor) Pakatan elected representatives,” he said, maintaining that he has done nothing wrong.

Even Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim has been the subject of a MACC probe over a complaint that he had used funds from state agencies to donate cows to his Bandar Tun Razak parliamentary constituency in Kuala Lumpur. He has since been cleared of wrongdoing.

Last July, Ean Yong’s political aide Teoh Beng Hock was called in as a witness to assist MACC in investigations into alleged kickbacks in the disbursement of constituency development funds.

However, Teoh was found dead outside the Selangor MACC's office in Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, on July 16, after being questioned overnight. An inquest is under way.

Amirudin also confirmed receipt of the notice and similarly said he does not know the MACC’s purpose in contacting him.

“They have classified the case under Section 17(a). I have not been told what this is it about,” he said.

“Initially, they told me to come in the morning, but I said that I will be attending a ceramah in Pahang tonight and will be back late. So I asked for the interview to be held in the afternoon.”

‘Tackle Toyo, too’

Lawyers will accompany both representatives, but it is uncertain if they will be allowed to be present during questioning. The MACC had previously disallowed the presence of lawyers.

In a related development, Selangor government information director Badrul Amin Baharom ( left ) said he believes the MACC’s intention is to see that the state government falls to BN.

“There is a possibility that MACC is being used to fulfill Umno-BN’s agenda to wrest Selangor (from Pakatan), as was done in Perak,” he said.

“I urge MACC to be professional in doing its job and also to take action against BN leaders including Dr Mohd Khir Toyo, who was allegedly involved in corrupt practice (during his tenure as Selangor menteri besar).”
