MyKad errors far from 'isolated' cases

It has also urged the NRD to “stop the play acting, politicking and trivialising” and to stop being in a state of denial.
“This is an issue of an outdated government mindset, red tape and incompetence...,” said Sabah PKR deputy chief Christina Liew.
“No one will believe the Home Ministry’s statement on Saturday that there is only one case in Sabah of a person’s religion being entered wrongly in the MyKad. This is not a case of one clerical error which can be easily rectified upon application.”
Liew said glaring errors in MyKad details are “one of the burning issues in the state” and that she deplores “the ignorant mindset in Putrajaya” that anyone with a “Muslim-sounding” name and bin or binte must be a Muslim even if it is proven otherwise.
Home Ministry secretary-general Mahmud Adam, while on a visit to Kota Kinabalu over the weekend, had promised the necessary rectification if the affected MyKad holders “can provide proof”.
“Many of the affected MyKad holders have tried to rectify the error but failed. Instead, they were given the run around by various government departments,” claimed Liew who heads the party’s Public Complaints Bureau.
“We have tried many times to arrange for a meeting for the problematic MyKad holders with the NRD in Kota Kinabalu but to no avail. We want to discuss, rectify and resolve the problem.”
She claimed that there are “little Napoleons” in the NRD, both in Sabah and Putrajaya, who have refused to rectify their errors in MyKads “causing the holders and their families to suffer the consequences of the errors from birth to death”.
‘Issue a directive’
Liew (left) disclosed that she had been gathering details on even more cases of MyKad holders in Sabah who have been wrongly classified as Muslims. This includes the necessary documentation to prove that the affected parties are not Muslim.
She hopes to have a meeting with either the NRD in Putrajaya or the Home Ministry soon and hand over the “several hundred” case files and documents in her possession.
Liew said she wants the premier to get the cabinet to issue a directive to the NRD in Putrajaya on “how to move forward on the issue without further red tape”.
Mahmud meanwhile also disclosed during his visit to Kota Kinabalu that some 250,000 eligible MyKad holders in Sabah, all 12-year-olds, have yet to apply for the document.
