Party boss Dr Chua Soi Lek described the idea as “a sheer waste of public funds”, which he said could be better utilised for “projects benefitting the rakyat”.
“This is especially so when the government is urging Malaysians to reduce expenditure to have a balanced budget,” he said in a press statement.
Chua urged the government to “reconsider its decision” on the new building and argued that project should not be a priority.
According to Chua, the Parliament House - built in 1962 at the cost of RM18 million - was one of the earliest landmarks in the country and is an institution by itself.
Existing Parliament still functional
“The need for Parliament to be relocated to Putrajaya is essentially to enable cabinet members and civil servants to have easier access.”
He said that the existing Parliament House still functions well, especially after its RM90 million renovations only five years ago.
“In comparison, the Westminster in the United Kingdom where the British Parliament House is located, is cramp but functional and fully utilised by British MPs.”
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz had on Wednesday said that the government planned to build a new Parliament at the administrative capital of Putrajaya.
