Pakatan Rakyat will place a DAP candidate in the Sibu parliamentary by-election, said the opposition coalition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

azlanA special meeting will be held on April 18 between DAP Sibu leaders and PAS and PKR to discuss framework of cooperation during the election campaign.

"We will only place only one DAP candidate as a reflection of our consensus," the opposition leader told reporters at his office in Parliament today.

Anwar also dismissed talk that Sarawak DAP leaders were in dispute with one another.

"There are no disputes. There has only been an open exchange of views in the media. I want to assure our friends that in this case, DAP in Sarawak will be contesting."

Anwar said all Pakatan components will pledge their full support for the yet-to-be named DAP candidate.

"We'll make sure every single personnel representative in PKR, and I believe PAS too, supports the DAP candidate. There's can be no compromise in discipline to ensure comfortable victory for our candidate, which is the DAP candidate.”

No candidate yet

Anwar said this at a press conference after the Pakatan leadership meeting in Parliament House. PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang was also present.

In 2008 general election, both PKR and DAP fielded candidates for the seat which was narrowly won by Supp’s Robert Lau Hoi Chew, who passed away on April 9.

Following Lau’s death, both parties have staked claim of the seat but have remained cordial about the matter and promised that the contest will definitely a straight fight.

For now, Supp had already recommended lawyer Robert Lau Hui Yew, 45, as its candidate but Pakatan’s candidate is still anyone’s guess.

"There is no nominees yet because even the by-election date has also not been decided yet,” quipped Anwar.
