S'gor sultan wants 'neutral' civil servants

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has urged civil servants in Selangor to act professionally and put their political allegiance aside in serving the people.

"(Civil servants) must be neutral and serve without taking into account political, religious or racial sentiments," he said when opening the state legislative assembly sitting today.
The current state government, wrested from Barisan Nasional (BN) by Pakatan Rakyat in 2008, has reportedly faced difficulties in implementing reforms due to resistance from some civil servants who have taken the side of the BN-led federal government.
The sultan said that, as a large contributor to the federal coffers, the Selangor and federal governments are "interdependent".
He also advised state assemblypersons to take their role seriously and not use sittings for politicking.
"There is a time and place for politics. Use this opportunity to discuss sound policies and to behave appropriately," he said.
Four BN state assemblypersons, who have served their six-month suspension, returned to the House today.
Warno Dogol (Sabak), Isa Abdul Kasim (Batang Kali), Marsum Paing (Dengkil) and Mohamad Idris Abu Bakar (Hulu Bernam) had been penalised for questioning the integrity of the Special Select Committee for Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat).
Opposition Leader Dr Mohd Khir Toyo is still suspended. He was punished last July after failing to attend a Selcat inquiry in March last year into use of Balkis funds during his tenure as menteri besar, and for criticising the select committee in his blog.
The sitting is scheduled to continue up to April 19.
