Chong Eng (DAP - Bukit Mertajam) and N Gobalakrishnan (PKR - Padang Serai) were today ejected from the Dewan Rakyat by Deputy Speaker Ronald Kiandee after a verbal altercation.
Chong’s dismissal stemmed from her heated debate with Women, Family and Community Development Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil over the duration of maternity leave in Malaysia.
At one point, Kinabatangan MP Bung Mokhtar Radin interjected and called Chong a manipulator.
Upset over the remark, which she deemed sexist and a personal attack, Chong pleaded with Kiandee to censure Bung Mokhtar, but the deputy speaker regarded the remark was made in jest and thus refused.
Chong’s repeated attempts to get Kiandee to reconsider was met with her removal from the House.
Speaking to reporters later, Chong said there was an element of double standards in how opposition lawmakers were treated.
"Despite others who use disparaging language in the Dewan Rakyat, no action was taken against them. However when we (opposition) stood up to demand for action against them, we are thrown out."
Later in the evening, Gobalakrishnan was given the boot after ignoring Kiandee’s repeated request to keep quiet.
Gobalakrishnan was involved in a heated argument with Federal Territories and Urban Well being Minister Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin over difficulties faced by the opposition in securing the use of DBKL facilities.
Raja Nong Chik said that there were procedures which must be followed but Gobalakrishnan was unsatisfied and repeatedly sought clarifications from the minister.
