Residents report S'gor MB to Suhakam over failed campus project

The Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) is being asked to hold a public inquiry on the action of Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim in halting the UiTM branch campus project in Serendah.
A group of Hulu Selangor residents today submitted to Suhakam, a memorandum signed by 10,000 residents who complain of being denied an opportunity to improve their economy due to Abdul Khalid's action.
"We have been waiting for such a development in our area as it can generate economic activities and spur development, as well as improve our economy," said a residents' representative, Seow Wei Min, 36, who was accompanied by 50 other residents to hand over the memorandum.
The memorandum, signed by residents of Serendah, Sungai Choh, Rawang, Ulu Yam, Bukit Beruntung and Lembah Beringin, was handed over to Suhaham commissioner Chiam Heng Keng at her office in Kuala Lumpur today.
Chiam said Suhakam would study the memorandum before taking further action.
In the memorandum, the residents say with the UiTM campus project halted, the local people lose opportunities for employment, of doing small businesses, increasing the value of their land, and of seeing more housing projects in the area.
Hamdan Adnan, adviser to the Serendah residents' representatives, said a public inquiry into the complaint should be conducted soonest possible as the issue had dragged on for some time.
He also urged the Selangor government to resolve the issue for the sake of development for the area as it could generate more income for residents and improve their quality of life as most of them were from the lower-income group.
The state government was reported to have decided not to approve the land for the campus project after Yayasan Basmi Kemiskinan (YBK), which is to carry out the project, refused to fulfil the condition of appointing Abdul Khalid and another state exco member to its board.
