A group of dissatisfied pro-Mahasiswa (pro-M) students from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) has submitted a letter of appeal to the university authorities this afternoon regarding the running of this year’s campus elections.

Wearing masks over their mouths as a sign of protest, about 15 students gathered at the social science faculty at 1pm today.

After paying an appeal fee of RM50 to the treasury, they handed over their letter to Mohd Mustafa Mokhtar, chairman of the Central Committee on Student Representative Selection.

NONEA pro-M spokesman said that the university authorities have promised to respond to their claims by 5pm tomorrow.

Pro-M claims that their pro-Aspirasi rivals, who emerged victorious at this year’s polls, have violated official campaigning rules.

They also allege that election officials failed to separate ‘spoilt’ ballots and decried the lack of transparency in the voting process.

Appeal letter 'not valid'

Meanwhile, a public relations officer from UKM said that pro-M’s appeal was null and void.

NONEHe said that according to standard procedure, appeals must be submitted within 24 hours from the release of the election results.

Thus, pro-M should have appealed the results by last Thursday afternoon.

Pro-M won 15 seats at UKM last Wednesday, losing by a margin of four seats to pro-Aspirasi.

Pro-M also lost to pro-Aspirasi at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Malaya (UM), sparking protests at UM that prompted officials to suspend the election results.
