DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has called on the Pakatan disciplinary committee - comprising two members from each of the three component parties - to meet to restore “discipline, commitment, cohesion and unity” of the opposition pact.
He observed that the coalition had won a renewal of public support with the maiden Pakatan convention two months ago and in its “demonstration of greater responsibility and maturity” in the ‘Allah’ controversy.
“But in a matter of days, these hard-won gains for the Pakatan Rakyat were largely undone not by the acts of our political adversaries but by the deeds of Pakatan Rakyat standard-bearers,” he lamented.
“As a result, there is now a new round of public questioning as to whether Pakatan Rakyat can be trusted with the great responsibility of federal power in the next general elections.”
Lim said that the Pakatan leadership council which meets tomorrow must address this issue. Members of the leadership council include PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and PAS president Hadi Abdul Awang.
Over the past few months, Pakatan’s unity was severely tested with the outburst of a number of leaders, most notably PAS Selangor chief Hasan Ali, PKR MP for Kulim Bandar Baru Zulkifli Noordin and Zahrain Mohd Hashim.
Hasan has been given a warning by his party’s disciplinary action, while Zulkifli has been slapped with a gag order pending an investigation.
