The culture of terrorism includes violence, vandalism, bombing, arson and brutality. Until recent years terrorism was widespread in certain areas of the Middle East, certain countries in Africa (i.e. Sudan), Southeast  Asia, Afghanistan, Philippines and Thailand.

There are other countries affected by terrorism but not included in this list because of its remoteness.

Malaysia, one of the countries in Southeast Asia, is developing as expected and is eventually aiming for developed nation status.

Initially, it was expected to reach its target by 2020. However, a realistic estimate puts it at just a few years after 2020.

Till recent times, Malaysia was peaceful and a safe nation. Thanks to the Almighty and thanks to Malaysians (for being tolerant, accommodating and peace-loving).

Will this scenario remain the same in the coming years? Will this tranquillity be preserved and protected by our younger generation? Well, the indicators are showing negative readings.

There was a drastic change in the behaviour and actions of Malaysians (especially in the youth) began to change when Anwar was arrested in 1998.

It was during that time the emotions and spirit of his supporters escalated drastically. What do you expect from them when their idol and leader was arrested overnight.

The next turn of events was chaotic and unauthorised assemblies. This was the beginning of Malaysians openly defying the authorities and braving water cannon and batons.

Malaysians have started exercising their freedom. It is good news that they are politically aware now. The problem is that they might exceed the limits given to them.

Unlike in the past, it is delicate, risky and flimsy to identify which Malaysians who support the ruling alliance and who support the opposition alliance.

This means all Malaysians should be very alert when they talk or do anything for the political party they support. Even in the police and army there is division.

Lately, we hear of homemade bombs and paint thrown at places of worship, vandalism of property during and after soccer games, thugs claiming to be members of political parties intimidating and manhandling others.

This clearly shows that there is an increase in the political awareness and the usage of freedom of expression. However, all Malaysians should exercise restraint.

Look at the violence elsewhere, with tremendous loss of lives and destruction of civilian property. Do we want to see that here?

To ensure Malaysia remains a safe heaven, all Malaysians should exercise mutual trust, have mutual respect and help each other.

Apart from that, they need to rely on their brains more than their emotions especially in decision-making.

Every community has a role to play to ensure prolonged peace and harmony in Malaysia.
