PKR sec-gen says quit decision 'final'

Amid speculation that the PKR supreme council meeting this evening may reject the resignation of its secretary-general, Salehuddin Hashim, the latter has reiterated his quit decision, saying it was irrevocable.

Salehuddin sent his resignation letter in on Thursday to party president Dr Wan Azizah Ismail and her deputy, Dr Syed Husin Ali, with an email copy to party adviser Anwar Ibrahim.
But apparently, Salehuddin’s sympathisers in the supreme council are speculating that his decision to quit is pliable and the man can be induced to reconsider.
“No, I’m not going to retract my decision to quit,” said Salehuddin to Malaysiakini when asked about the speculation swirling among some supreme council members.
The latter have heard stories that Salehuddin had wanted to quit six times before and on each occasion was persuaded to stay.
“That’s not true,” said Salehuddin when asked to comment on the multiple times he has been rumoured to have quit in the 22 months of his tenancy as secretary-general.
“They know I have always laid my job down on the line, saying I’ll quit if I found my position was untenable. But that didn’t lead to my sending in a letter of resignation and then retracting it six times,” he clarified.
There’s no turning back
He explained that even last October when he was said to have sent in a letter of resignation to Anwar Ibrahim, he had not done so.
“I merely sent an email message to Syed Husin telling him that I was going to quit. He suggested I wait until he returned from the Haj pilgrimage, and he meanwhile alerted Anwar who reverted to me, asking for my reasons.
“I shot off an email with a litany of complaints that was construed as a resignation letter when in actual fact it was a letter of lament,” sighed Salehuddin.
“The only time I actually sent in a letter of resignation was last Thursday after the first ever Pakatan Rakyat convention was well over and Syed Husin was firmly back from Mecca, both conditions he imposed as an obligation on me which I felt I was unable to disregard,” he emphasised.
“But now I’m going and there’s no turning back,” asserted Salehuddin, as if to say that his supporters in the supreme council were best advised to let the matter rest.
