Selangor economic advisor Anwar Ibrahim will not be involved in day-to-day economic management of the state as he is a non-executive, said Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

Clarifying the matter today, Khalid said Anwar's main role is to provide the state government with ideas and policies for the implementation of the state's development projects.

"The state government will inform the media from time to time about the plans and visions drawn by the new economic advisor," said Khalid.

NONEAnwar was appointed to Khalid's office on Nov 13, at a salary of RM1. The former deputy-premier is entrusted to draw investments from the Middle East and assist plans to turn Selangor into an Islamic financial hub.

The appointment raised eyebrows because Anwar, as de facto leader of PKR, is Khalid's political boss. Critics have also panned Anwar’s credentials over his management of the 1997 financial crisis as Finance Minister.

No plastic bag campaign

In another development, Selangor executive council member Elizabeth Wong announced that the state government will kick off campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags this Saturday.

Wong said the campaign will begin during a programme in a shopping mall in Petaling Jaya and will be carried out all the subsequent Saturdays.

NONE"A group of volunteers and members will 'turun padang' to educate the public about the importance of the project in hypermarkets, pasar tani and pasar malam," she said.

Wong added, the project will undergo a six-month trial period.

The Selangor campaign follows a successful campaign which has already been implemented in Penang enforcing a ban on plastic bags in hypermarkets.
