Several dignitaries, legal practitioners and politicians, including ministers, were among scores of people who paid their last respects to the late S Augustine Paul today.
    
Grief filled the air at the home of the Federal Court judge in Bangsar as the coffin carrying his remains were brought to the nearby Parish of St Peter's church before burial.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Abdul Aziz who were among those who conveyed their condolences to the Augustine family's representatives, regarded Augustine as sincere and honest during his service as a judge.

Also seen at the Augustine's residence were Chief Justice Zaki Azmi, Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail and former president of the Federation of Chinese Associations of Malaysia Lim Gait Tong.
      
Head of the Prosecution Division of the Attorney-General's Chambers, Tun Abdul Majid Tun Hamzah, said he was saddened by Augustine's demise as he had served the nation well.

"I knew him for a long time... he was very learned and was well-versed with all the cases he presided over without being influenced by anyone," he said.

Karpal: He was one of the best judges

MIC president S Samy Vellu believed that the people of this country would always remember Augustine as a kind man and his excellent service in the judiciary.

Member of Parliament for Bukit Gelugor, Karpal Singh said Augustine who had studied at the same university with him was a good friend and judge.

"He was one of the best judges we had, we can't deny that," he said.
      
Augustine's nephew Dr Laurence Wilfred said his uncle who had been ill for almost two years, was a kind and helpful man.

"We are deeply saddened by his demise as he was a role model for us to strive to be successful in life," he said.

The late Augustine was buried at the Subang Lutheran Garden, near Sungai Buloh, at about 3pm.
