'No ghost in Plaza Masalam'

If media reports are to be believed, the late Teoh Beng Hock’s ghost has been seen in Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam - the building outside which his body was found on July 16.
If media reports are to be believed, the late Teoh Beng Hock’s ghost has been seen in Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam - the building outside which his body was found in mysterious circumstances on July 16.
Office workers and those with business in the building have talked of little else since the reports appeared last week.
However, personnel from the firm charged with the plaza’s security, are certain that no such haunting took place.
Ruslan Nordin, senior officer with Evergreen Venues Sdn Bhd said that, ever since China Press reported the claims on Dec 4, his team has been receiving inquiries as to whether these are true.
“I heard the same allegations two or three days ago from our customers (in Plaza Masalam). But I refuted (the stories) because we never received any such report from my security personnel.
“I know about it, it was reported in the Chinese papers, but I paid no heed. Instead I talked to my guards and they say ‘there are none, sir’. All this while, we patrolled the top, bottom and underground levels, once every hour, there was nothing there.”
Ruslan said he has not received any report of paranormal activity to date.
“There are no ghosts, neither water spirits nor skeletal apparitions. They don’t exist,” he told Malaysiakini during a visit to the building.
Three individuals have alleged to date that they saw an apparition bearing resemblance to the Teoh, the former political aide to Selangor exco Ean Yong Hian Wah.
They claimed to have seen his ghost wandering the hallways of the Selangor MACC office, located on the 14th floor of the building, as well as on the fifth floor of the plaza.
A security guard and two MACC officers, all of whom had declined to be named, were quoted as saying that they had seen an apparition in October.
Tight surveillance
Ruslan described the rumours as “cartoon stories”, as the building would have still been filled with people at 6.30pm, the time of the alleged sightings.
However, his team has since taken more precautions - mainly to ensure that journalists and photographers do not make recordings in the premises without permission.
“We will not allow this unless they have written permission from the administrative office,” he said, pointing out that Plaza Masalam is private property.
The premises are under the watchful eyes of four to five security personnel at any time, he said, but the company does not provide security for the MACC offices on Levels 14 and 15.
“They have their own (personnel). We have never spoken to them,” he said.
Malaysiakini also called at the MACC office on Level 14 to obtain comments, but were kept under tight surveillance by a security guard, who accompanied the team.
The receptionist said the director and other officers were not available and advised the team to make an appointment.
The inquest into the cause of Teoh’s death, which was scheduled to resume today at the Shah Alam Coroner’s Court, has been postponed to Dec 17.
