Cabinet declassifies Bukit Antarabangsa landslide report

Works Minister Shaziman Abu Mansor said the government had approved the MPAJ's request to publicise the report following the decision reached at the cabinet meeting yesterday.
"The decision was made to ensure that the interest and safety of the people in the area are safeguarded. I hope the MPAJ will not merely disclose the report but also understand and implement the recommendations made to improve the situation in the area so that the possibility of a recurrence can be reduced," he told reporters after a 'gotong-royong' programme to repair the houses of poor families in Kampung Baru Air Kuning Selatan, near Tampin today.
He said that on Nov 25, the MPAJ had written a letter to him requesting for the report on the landslide in the area to be declassified under the Official Secrets Act (OSA) 1972.
The application was made by the MPAJ after the Public Works Department had handed over the technical report on the landslide to the local authority, which would later be publicised.
Not made under pressure
In the incident on Dec 6, 2008, five people were killed and 14 bungalows destroyed at Taman Bukit Mewah, Bukit Antarabangsa, Hulu Klang.
Shaziman, who is also Tampin parliamentarian, said the government had granted the request to publicise the report not because it had been widely reported in the Internet, but following procedure that had been stipulated.
On the leak of the report in the Internet, he said the ministry had already lodged a police report on Dec 2.
"The report had actually been ready for quite some time and was being kept at the ministry and JKR (Public Works Department), but it had never been published in the Internet. But when the report was handed over to the MPAJ, we found it had been widely spread out.
"As such, we decided to lodge a police report because when it was handed over to the MPAJ, it was still under the OSA 1972. So, we must investigate how it could have been spread," he added.
Shaziman made no mention about declassifying another secret report - the Hazardous Map report, which indicates the level of risk in residential areas in Hulu Klang in Ampang.
