'Don't dispute Selcat's existence'

Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has brushed aside questions on Selcat's role, saying that its modus operandi should not be disputed.
Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has brushed aside questions on Selcat's role, saying that its modus operandi should not be disputed.
He was responding to Yap Ee Wah (BN-Sungai Pelek, left) who asked if Selcat should remain in existence, considering that it has "(insulted) state officers during a public hearing".
"I can easily take on that question. You should understand how Selcat works," Abdul Khalid told the state legislative assembly sitting today.
He said state officials should not feel affronted just because hearings are carried out openly, as it is "our choice to ensure a more transparent state".
Khalid stressed that Selcat was established to gain public trust based on the concept of transparency, responsibility and competency.
"Selcat enables weaknesses to be overcome. It compels everyone to feel that they have to do their work responsibly. In this way, Selangor can be a more progressive and developed state," he said.
Abdul Khalid the holding of open inquiries enables the people to find out what goes on behind the scenes in public offices and ensures that public officials are answerable to the public.
"Questions can be raised on the work that they have done. They have to explain the rationale of everything they do," he said.
As there are still many issues to be addressed, he said Selcat should remain in existence. He also noted that Selangor has beaten other states by setting up this committee.
State PAS commissioner Hasan Ali had recently expressed dissatisfaction over Selcat's 'hard-hitting' questioning of district officers during an inquiry into the alleged abuse of public funds.
