The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) dragnet in Selangor continued with another former state assemblyperson being charged.


NONEEx-Teratai assemblyperson Yap Soo Sun from Geraka was charged in the Shah Alam Sessions court this afternoon along with five others.

This morning, MACC hauled five individuals to court, including Umno parliamentarian Abd Rahman Bakri, to face corruption charges.

Yap was slapped with seven charges for falsifying information in claiming payments from his allotted constituency budget involving non-existing functions relating to Chinese New Year and Thaipusam festivals for four residential areas.

When met in court, a worried-looking Yap said that his personal assistant was "careless" in his paperwork.

"It was a technical mistake, not a big mistake," he said.

However, he declined to comment when asked about the allegations of non-existing functions that he claimed to have held, and he replied that his assistant seems to have made an error in the names of places for each of the functions in his paperwork.

Meanwhile, Mohd Firdaus, 41, faced seven similar charges for abetting Yap.

Currently unemployed

Yap claimed trial to all charges. The MACC prosecutor sought bail at RM30,000.

NONELawyer Salehuddin Saidin applied for a lower bail of RM10,000 as Yap is unemployed and is still not eligible for his pension as he is still below 55. Yap is 43.

Sessions judge Mat Ghani Abdullah set bail at RM25,000 and fixed Dec 14 for mention.

The anti-corruption watchdog is also investigating several Pakatan Rakyat assemblypersons, leading some quarters to allege that it is part of a plot to topple the new state government.

However, both Barisan Nasional leaders and MACC have denied this.
