Former president of Yayasan Dakwah Islam Malaysia (Yadim) Mohd Nakhaie Ahmad today denied opposing the appointment of former Perlis Mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin to replace him.

He said he was also not involved in handing over a memorandum from thecSyariah Lawyers Association of Malaysia (PGSM) to Yang di-Pertuan Agong TuankuvMizan Zainal Abidin on Oct 12.

"I've never been involved in any memorandum sent by the NGOs. So, why shouldvhe (Asri) insinuate me in his blog?" he said to reporters here today.

"The prime minister will be appointing the person to replace me at Yadim, and right now the post is vacant as I've retired from yesterday," he added.

On Oct 12, PGSM sent a memorandum to the King calling for Asri's appointment as Yadim president to be withdrawn due to various allegations, including that he had ridiculed the ‘ulama’.

Nakhakie said he was surprised too with Asri's statement last Saturday, asking for the National Audit Department to also investigate Yadim (the Islamic Propagation Foundation of Malaysia).

"I don't understand why he wants the department to investigate Yadim as it has been doing so.

"This is not good as it involves a small issue and religious people like us. I regret the issue has been blown out of proportion," he said.

Asked whether he would take legal action against Asri, Nakhaie said: I will see how far he goes." - Bernama
